ABOUT OUR PAPER

Centuries ago, in the hills of Northeastern Burma, the local hill tribes noticed that the bark of the mulberry tree naturally peeled off once a year. They discovered that this bark could be made into an all-natural paper without damaging the tree itself. The hill tribe people called this tree "Saa" (The Giving Tree), and the same word is still used in Thailand today.

Thanks to growing interest in environ-mentally safe products, the craft of making "Saa" paper continues to thrive as a flourishing cottage industry. This allows many housewives and elderly people to make their living at home. With every purchase you contribute to the livelihood of many thankful people.

The manufacturing process is the same now as it was centuries ago: The bark of the Saa
tree is pounded into a mushy pulp, to which natural dyes and/or plant parts (petals, leaves, stems) are added. The pulp is then put onto a cloth covered frame and simply left to dry in the sun. The finished paper is carefully peeled off
the screen. We are proud to offer a large assort-ment of exquisite products featuring this unique, chemical free natural paper.

About Our Percussion Frogs

The original design is an ancient Vietnamese drum. Our Percussion Frogs are hand carved from a single piece of untreated first quality monkey pod wood, a fast growing, non-endangered, tropical fruit wood. Each frog has it's own unique sound, depending on the size of the hollowed cavern and the wood density. Generally, the small frogs sound like peepers or tree frogs, and the larger ones resonate in deeper tones like bullfrogs. To play, hold the frog by the hind legs, and use the large end of the mallet to stroke from the base of the spiky spine to the head. Croaky fun for the whole family!
